Exclusive Interview with Vlad from Mina & Lucy’s Guide to Slaying Dracula
GZM: What is your name and what part do you play?
Julian Chowdhury: I’m Julian Chowdhury and I play Vlad in Mina and Lucy’s Guide to Slaying Dracula.
GZM: Have you ever been in any other GZM shows, Julian?
Julian Chowdhury: I have not, actually.
GZM: It’s your first show with us?
Julian Chowdhury: Yes, it is. I hope I’m doing it justice.
GZM: Oh my gosh. You ARE Vlad. Have you listened to any of the episodes yet?
Julian Chowdhury: Yeah, I listened to the first one, the pilot, and it sounds awesome. All the jokes are hitting really well. It’s got just enough of that mystery feeling and comedy and it’s just this perfect blend. I freaking love the writing on this show so much. It’s so well written. I just really love the show.
GZM: What’s your favorite thing about Vlad?
Julian Chowdhury: I think he’s just so witty and like always joking around and like the worst situations, which I feel like is the kind of a bit that I do. I joke around way too much, so I just love being able to ad lib and improv with this guy who’s a teenage vampire, but also like hundreds of years old. So, he’s just super funny and it just gives me that freedom to be a little bit sarcastic, you know?
GZM: Do you have a favorite line or moment from the show?
Julian Chowdhury: I do. I don’t remember the exact words of the line, but it’s this really long speech where I have to say it all in one giant breath. I practiced for that actually, and I was like, okay, I’ve got to work on my breath. I told my dad about it, and I was like “Guess what? I had to say like this really long speech and I did in one take!” and then we had a whole competition about do it faster. Like he didn’t believe it was hard. I was like, okay, you know what, just, just let me have my win. Let me have my win! (here’s the line from Episode 110)
GZM: Do you like Halloween?
Julian Chowdhury: I do like Halloween. I love dressing up. It’s been a very big family tradition. Like, I’d go out with our little neighborhood group of friends. I go trick or treating still. Although, I’m probably going to have to stop doing that soon. Which sucks, but I’ll still buy candy.
GZM: Have you thought about what you’re going to go as this year? Are you going to dress up?
Julian Chowdhury: I was thinking the Indian Spider Man. I’m half Indian. My parents call me a Hinju. I’m half Indian, half Jewish. So I’m thinking about going as the the Indian Spider Man from the new Spider Man animated movie. That would be a fun costume. I haven’t done any research into it yet. I really need to, because time’s a tickin’ But I will…
GZM: What do you think your best costume was ever?
Julian Chowdhury: Last year I did the Joker and my mom bought this crazy accurate, like Joker makeup from Amazon and did it for me. And she’s not like a makeup artist or anything, but she did it so well. And I just felt so good and confident. It was weird. The costume that I got online, the shirt didn’t fit me or something so I had to wear like a different suit shirt. But it worked really well. It was like a checkered thing and then I had the whole face makeup going and so I was a proud joker that night, channeling my inner Joaquin Phoenix.
GZM: In Mina and Lucy, Lucy can turn into a bat. If you could turn into any animal, Julian, what would it be?
Julian Chowdhury:
That’s a good question. I think, hmm, I’m going with the sloth Yeah, just because then, like you have an, a legitimate excuse to be lazy. You have to be slow when you’re a sloth and, and people will still find that equally as entertaining.GZM: I do need to tell you that I’ve heard they smell awful. Just putting it out there.
Julian Chowdhury: I mean, I already have teenage
B. O. So it can’t be worse than that.GZM: Julian, do you have a favorite subject in school?
Julian Chowdhury: Definitely English. I love writing. I love poetry. I’m definitely a big writing geek. So, got to go with English.
GZM:
Have you read anything good lately?Julian Chowdhury:
I just, this is going to kind of come out of the blue, but it was for school. It was like this really philosophical text. It’s called The Stranger by Albert Camus. Really, really intense. Um, but yeah, it was a good, really good read.GZM: What’s your favorite TV show?
Julian Chowdhury: I’m going to go with The Good Place. I love that show. I know it’s over, but I’ve missed that show so much. Incredible show. Every once in a while if I’m ever like thinking about, am I going to go to heaven or hell? I’ll just turn it on and figure it out.
GZM: Do you play video games?
Julian Chowdhury: I do when I can. Right now, I haven’t had as much time just because school year is starting and I’m applying to college, which is a very crazy experience. Um, so, I haven’t had a lot of time. But, yeah, I definitely would be playing video games,
GZM: Do you have a favorite that you like to play?
Julian Chowdhury:
Right now there’s this game called Sea of Thieves. It’s a big time-consumer, but it’s fun. It’s like a pirate thing. You sail across this big map and it’s almost a bit realistic and that’s why it takes so long ’cause you’re sailing forever. So in some ways it’s, it’s kind of torturous, but like, it’s fun.GZM: Do you have a special skill? Something that maybe we don’t know about you. And would be surprised about.
Julian Chowdhury: Okay, well, it’s not surprising but I can do an Indian accent. I’ve listened to my grandparents a lot over FaceTime when I was younger. So I just kind of picked it up a little bit. And I’m not very good at it right now, now that I’m hearing myself, but I can do it sometimes for certain auditions. Yes.
GZM: What are you thinking for university?
Julian Chowdhury: Well, my top two are USC and UCLA. USC mainly. They have this business and cinematic arts program, which just sounds like a dream to me, like awesome. But they only accept 55 people a year, so you know, great, great chances.
UCLA though, just because it’s an awesome school, and I would get to stay in LA, so. That’s kind of my… My dream.
GZM: So you’re thinking close to home?
Julian Chowdhury: Thinking close to home. I do want to stay on campus, but I’d miss my dogs too much. Oh, my parents too, but like I’d talk to them, but dogs.
GZM: It has been an absolute pleasure working with you, Julian.
Julian Chowdhury: Yes, you as well. Thanks for having me. This is awesome. I love this project.
