SCAVENGER HUNT

Be like the characters of  ‘Left Arm Treasure Society’ and join our GZM Summer Camp scavenger hunt! Print out our checklist of items and tick them off as you complete them. Our scavenger hunt includes things that can be found inside your home, in the outdoors, and in the grocery store!

NAME THAT LANDMARK

Did you know that many of the Chicago locations and landmarks in ‘Left Arm Treasure Society’ are actually real places? Download our map of Chicago and identify the real landmarks from the show.

We also added some bonus landmarks for extra credit…see if you can name them!

WEEK FIVE ACTIVITIES

TOUCH GRASS

Whether or not you’re in Kentucky, there’s plenty to discover outside in nature. We challenge you to go out on a nature walk and keep a log of the interesting plants and animals you encounter. How many? What colors? Did you see any scat?

You can also use apps to identify plants and animals, even bird songs!

  1. iNaturalist (for plants/animals)
    One of the world’s most popular nature apps. Just snap a picture of any plants, animal, or fungi you come across, and the app will help identify it for you.
  2. Merlin Bird ID (for birds)
    This app helps you identify birds based on their songs and calls. Simply press record on the app, and it will list the birds around you.
  3. AllTrails (hiking/walking routes)
    Perfect for accessing a large database of trails. You can even read trail reviews and filter by difficulty and distance.
  4. Star Walk 2 (for stargazing)
    Are you doing your nature walk at night and need help identifying the stars? No problem! Point your phone at the night sky to get real time maps of stars, planets, and constellations over your screen.

VISIT MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – WITH YOUR EARS

Did you know you could virtually visit Mammoth Cave, one of the real life settings of ‘Discovering Dad’?

Check out this audio tour (provided by the National Park Service), and share one interesting fact with us that you learned from the tour.

WEEK FOUR ACTIVITIES

WHAT’S YOUR LOCAL CRYPTID?

What’s lurking in your neighborhood? Cryptids are creatures whose existence is not yet proven by science (but don’t tell them that!). And they come in all shapes and sizes. Often their legends are formed by the people and environments around them. Google your local cryptid and tell us who’s in your neck of the woods! 

Jess did some research and learned about the Dog Woman, a local cryptid spotted in the Watts neighborhood in LA. Watch her video for inspo!

INVENT YOUR OWN CRYPTID

A cryptid is “an animal or creature whose existence has been claimed by eyewitnesses or folklore, but that has never been scientifically proven or classified.” Examples include Big Foot, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Mothman.

This week, we want to see your original cryptid creations!

You can draw your cryptid design and send us a picture, or write a description of what your cryptid looks like. Here’s Charlotte’s invention!

WEEK THREE ACTIVITIES

TIME CAPSULE

Do you remember what you were thinking about five minutes ago? How about five years ago? Now’s the time to write a letter to your future self! Here are some prompts to get started: 

  • What does a typical day look like for you? 
  • What do you spend your time doing or thinking about?
  • What do you want your life to look like in the future?
  • Ask your future self some questions!
  • What are you proud of right now? What do you hope to achieve?

If you need more inspiration, here is a letter that Jess wrote to her future self!

SING A SONG

Did you know our podcast ‘Tomorrow’ is based on the musical Annie? The musical features famous show tunes like “It’s a Hard-Knock Life,” “Tomorrow,” and “Easy Street.”

For this week’s activity, it’s time to stretch those vocal cords! Record yourself singing any song from ‘Annie’, and send it to us at summercamp@gzmshows.com. It can be the whole song, or just one section. 

This version of Hard Knock Life is so good! It’s from the 1982 movie version.

Listening to Tomorrow has us feeling like putting on a show! Or maybe we should just make a “greatest songs from a musical” playlist.  For this week’s summer camp activity, make a list of your top five favorite songs from any musical and send it to us at summercamp@gzmshows.com.

DIY HOCKEY

The basic elements of hockey are simple: puck, stick, and net. That’s really all you need to get playing. So in the spirit of the Ice Lions, we challenge you to DIY your own puck, stick, and net using unconventional materials.

Get creative and send us a picture! Bonus points if you can score a goal!

Watch a sports movie

Summer vacation is the perfect time to catch up on  movies, whether they’re old favorites or new discoveries. So, let’s talk sports movies! A sports movie is “a film genre in which any particular sport plays a prominent role in the film’s plot or acts as its central theme.”

What are YOUR your favorite sports movies? Write them down, make a collage of movie posters, write a review…get creative!

Here are some of our favorite sports movies to get you thinking:

EDIBLE ICE CUBES

This summer, keep cool with some edible ice cube recipes! Whether you add fruit or edible flowers to frozen water, or pour juice/tea/lemonade into an ice cube tray, we want to see your edible ice cubes! We made ice cubes with gummy bear inclusions. Check them out! !

WEEK ONE ACTIVITIES

AGILITY LADDER OR WATER BALLOON FOOTBALL

Get outside and get active with some football drills! Set up an agility ladder with sticks and run through it with your friends. Check out this video for some inspiration. Who got the best time? OR if it’s hot outside, play water balloon football! Just make sure you throw out the balloons in a trash bin when you’re done!

Make Your Own Sports Announcer REel

Recreate the exciting final scene in your voice! Listen to Jess do her version first!

  1. Read the script (click the image below), do a practice run thinking about how you want it to sound.
  2. Grab your phone, or someone else’s phone (with permission!), and open the voice recording app. Start recording your scene, be creative! Add some sound effects or get your friends to join in. 
  3. Send your finished record to us at summercamp@gzmshows.com
